Concern to Action:

If you’re a parent or other caregiver concerned that a child may have autism, it’s important and always appropriate to take your concerns to a doctor. We encourage you to do so promptly, as earlier intervention can improve outcomes. Call your health care provider and tell him or her that you would like to make an appointment because you are concerned about your child’s development. Bring the milestones checklist with you and include specific examples. If you or the health care provider thinks there might be a delay, ask for a general developmental screening and an autism-specific screening. If either of you are still concerned, ask for a referral to a specialist who can do a more in-depth evaluation.
